Can sharing videos on reddit have a bad effect on ranking?

A friend of mine has asked me to help them out with their genuine channel & try to get them more views. Now, I know nothing about ranking on youtube, but they already get good organic traction.

I wouldn't want to ruin that.

So, does it actually help in ranking? Can it have bad effects? Does it not matter at all? Does it depend on the engagement of the posts shared on reddit?
Any info would be highly apprecaited

I think this is like buying social signals for SEO, I don't see how it can affect you negatively, even if the Reddit posts had comments saying your video is bad quality...

I guess it can be relatively useful to get some views and to show the youtube algorithm that your video is getting attention outside of youtube

i heard someone on "Youtube Creator " channel said that external traffic has no effect on ranking or recommendation.

Sharing on Reddit is good but this also doesn't mean you can freely spam on reddit for views. Ultimately it all depends on the engagement and spamming will ruin that. It's helpful if you are sharing videos to an audience who like your content. It's mostly good for small channels as reddit has a dedicated community in any niche and if you find a subreddit that allows youtube videos in your niche is a goldmine for sure.

If you share a bad video on reddit or in a subreddit unrelated to the video, the retention rate would be low which would cause a bad effect on rankings

Spamming reddit with youtube videos actually ruined one of my channels, never did after that.

Don’t see how it could have a bad effect as long as not spammed and submitted to the correct audience, unless people click off lowering retention

It can ruin you channel rankings mostly because some visitors will watch a short duration of your video. Watch time is essential for ranking a YouTube video.
