Here is a case study showcasing the impact of social signals on one of our customer's websites, The campaign is still ongoing, but I thought it would be useful to share the results.

Objective: To see the effect of social signals.

I won't reveal the exact domain, but here are some details,

  • Domain is 2.5 years old , it is not an exact match domain.
  • Regular SEO was done on domain from June 2011 till October 2012
  • SEO was stopped after October 2012
  • The traffic on the domain had become stagnant since July 2012 till March 2013 - to approx 29,000 to 32,000 visitors a month
  • The domain has wordpress theme , has 150 + articles

Here's exactly what was done:

  • Social Media campaign was started on 15th March, The social signals were drip feeded
  • Approx 1000 google plus 1s per month on all the main urls of the website - around 75 urls (3000 google plus 1s in 3 months)
  • Around 400 retweets were done
  • Around 200 facebook shares were done
  • The facebook fanpage's fans were increased - 6000 worldwide fans drip feeded.
  • Every single day, a link from the website was posted on the facebook fanpage

Impact:

Although the site was getting good traffic, but the traffic had become stagnant since many months. Social signals brought in new life to the traffic on the website !
There has been a jump of almost 9000 + visitors per month for 2 months in a row now !
From 31,896 visits in March, the website got to 43,369 visits in May !
The jump is in the visits from search results.

This is just another case study (just like some others shared here) that reveals that - Social signals do work and can help any website, since google has been giving a lot of emphasis on these lately.

Yup, they definitely work.

So how did you go about drip feeding that many +1s?

We had chosen around 75 urls from the website, A few plus 1s were done each day on 25 urls the first month, the same process was repeated for 25 urls next month , and the same was done for 25 urls the third month.

One happy client

Yeah, u bet :D

Fantastic case study! I've also had similar results but I would highly suggest you try creating a Google Plus page for the website. You can link the site to the page and then send social signals to the Google + page as well. These kind of social signals have had the highest impact in my experience.

The 2nd figure in the screenshot is from - people visiting the website from search results

yeah, as I said I mentioned a few details above. We already have linked a Google Plus profile page to the fb fanpage, so whatever is posted on the fb fanpage, it also gets posted automatically on the google plus profile page, we have also got some g+ on the google plus profile page.

Very nice looking case study, how long are you going to be running it for?

Thanks, I have been running it for 3 months now, Its planned to run for a complete 1 year !

yea but was that traffic from google or from the social signals?

The additional traffic was due to social signals, but it did not come directly from those social signal sites. The traffic came from Google.
Google gives a lot of emphasis on these, once they noticed social activity being done on the website, the trafiic from search engines started increasing.

Thanks for some great data to look at. :D

Wish you would split the site up a bit for split testing purposes and do regular SEO + social signals to certain parts and then compare those to the parts that get only social signals.

Buddy,

Social signals help the site as a whole, If we do regular SEO + social signals to certain parts , and provide social signals to a specific part.
It wont give us a distinction between the 2 results.

because social signals work and complement the SEO of a website as a whole !

There's one massive oversight in this case study IMO

What about conversions? Have they increased/decreased/stayed the same?

Traffic is one thing. Results are another.

I may have missed it BUT did this do anything for your rankings based on keywords? Movement up or down?
