If your website got hit by Google May Algorithm Update, you have to check out this Study from Alexander Vasev on twitter.

He explains how most of the websites that got hit had identical traffic drop patterns.
He also shares a graph about Google rankings showing a query dropping off of the Top 100 and going back to its previous Top 1 position in short periods.

But the most important take is the Google Raters.
Google hires individual contractors who visit your website (usually one page, based on Google Analytics data) and they rate your website across many many aspects.
The IMPORTANT part of his study shows how all of the websites that go hit in May Core Algorithm Update were visited by a Google Rater few days before their traffic DROPPED.

If your website got HIT by this update, please check if you were visited by a Google Rated days before it happened, follow these steps:

Go to Google Analytics -> Go to Acquisition -> Referrals and search for "raterhub".

He tested this also on his website and Google raters have visited his website on 4 different occasions: May 26th (the next day after Google announced the update) - a few days later his website lost all rich snippets.

The next visit was on June 9th (the day Google announced the end of the core update rollout) - most likely they checked back to see if the website improved the aspects they didn't like that got the website penalized.
No changes were implemented and no recovery followed.
His site got visited 2 more times, making 4 times in total. What's interesting, they were looking at one exact page all 4 times.

SO, if your website got HIT by this Algorithm Update, make sure to check if you had traffic from "raterhub" referral source.
If you find out Raterhub has visited your website before your traffic dropped, you need to check which of your pages raterhub actually visited.
Most of the cases show they check only 1 of your pages on your website, so you have to go check that page and check for any potential ERROR.
If you find anything make sure to FIX everything and wait for raterhub to revisit your page.

However, this doesn't mean you will get your TRAFFIC back. I saw reports from a few people that their rankings and traffic recovered in July. Some of them claimed that had done no work on the website whatsoever.
It looks like these websites were restored manually. And while it is a good idea to try to improve your website before the next core update, there is a chance your website will recover even if you do nothing.

Personally, I've never heard of him, shame he's an Everton fan, but this isn't a bad read.
you a L'pool one? :)

@AlbinKurti I wonder what errors those guys found on that page... and how these raters choose which page to check (I'd assume they choose the pages with the most traffic / ranking keywords, but I'm just guessing here)

Websites that got HIT were mostly PAA sites, also most of the sites that got hit got their Snippets removed from google results, meaning these Google raters were probably checking for websites who are just scraping Google PAA results and copy-pasting them in their websites. They probably were also looking at the websites that are over-optimizing their articles to win the Google snippets.

I can tell you one thing for sure. If you have affiliate site and you got hit, it's because google is showing Ecom sites instead of blogs for your keywords some times even for whole 1st page.
How those sites gonna recover by doing nothing?

I was offered Google Quality Rater position back in 2015/16 (don’t remember exactly)
If you want to become a quality rater you can join too.
Google has been hiring agencies on contract basis to hire people as a quality rater. They have assigned a pen name to the position namely “Social media evaluator”
Before joining they give you an ebook “Search engine quality rating guidelines” ( The ebook was leaked back then and was shared by most of the internet marketers, it was the time when people first time stumbled across the term E-A-T )
After that they conduct an online test which you have to pass.
After joining the postition they provide you an app, when you open the app it randomly opens up any web page, you will have to figure out in a few minutes whether the page is abide by the quality rating guidelines or not. Based on the content you have to give rating between 0 to 10 star scale. Once rated the screen refreshes and another web page occures.

Sorry guys there is more stuff to write but I’m tired.

AI content will do harm always. Google can detect it.

What these raters try to do is to figure out if your site is promoting violence, selling illegal things etc. They are not rating if your site should rank or not.
They got a giant ai called Google algo to do just that.

Then why do they provide the “Quality Rating Guidelines” in which they include EAT kind of stuff?
As I have said earlier, I had worked as quality rater and I know what I was instructed to do.

Quality is not equal to eat. People come here and claim all kind of crap. It don't mean nothing.
