So, i have a two weeks old site ranked on 13th place in google. Today i tried the first time manual blog commenting on HIGH PR sites. PR1-PR4, 0-3 outbound links and approved immediately. I think it will take some days until i see effects on my site.

But i'm curious about your experiences if you have some. So if anyone had success with this method please let us know. In addition i will report back if it works.

It works great.

Use web 2.0 networks, automated tools and manual commenting.

Context, quantity and quality. Never fails.

Commenting does work. But if you have a two week old site already in position 13 that would suggest your competition is low, so with very few links and better onsite optimisation you could be number one pretty easy.

I do with PR ≥ 5. There are not that many anyway and 15-20 PR7 links have the same effect as thousands PR 0-2. At least that's what I get from my tests.

On the other hand low pr are needed to mask things in yahoo site explorer. But since that's getting removed in the near future I'll probably stop using low pr sites completely.

I was in the same situation as you a couple weeks back. A new site, around 2 - 3 weeks old, Pg 3 , #4 for main keyword. It was stuck there for a couple of days, so i blasted it with manual PR 4 - 10 Gov/Edu backlinks. Scraped a list of only PR 5 - 10 Edu/Gov list, and manually posted on them. Of course, had to wait for moderation checks, but the ones that were approved, wow. Within a week, my site went from Pg 3 to Page 1, just below the stupid Google Places. (yes, it is a local keyword i am targeting) If only i could beat Google Places... :(
Anyways, yes High PR backlinks, with manual commenting for high success rate, will in any least, improve your rankings. Especially seeing how it a low comp keyword.
Best of success!

Lol Micallef, how did I know you were going to reply to this thread. What 'automated tools' do you use for quantity though, since you're not an xrumer guy surely not scrapebox?

I built 200 PR3-PR7 (page) all DF links, with the keyword I was targeting I was dead sure I would get 1st place easy, but instead my hard work landed my ass straight in the sandbox (March) and have been there ever since. My site has gone from brand new to PR3, however. Bittersweet of course 'cos I ain't ranking for shit, despite addition of many whitehat links and new content! I also cloaked my affiliate links better than harry potter!

I used to manually comment on blogs many moons ago but not anymore. It's too time consuming for me. I have VAs that do it for me now.

Do you care if its nofollow/********? How do you go about finding such high PR pages?

No, I don't care about nf/df because G explicitly relies on links to rank stuff. They don't want webmasters to negatively influence the rankings of other potentially 'useful' pages so I am pretty sure that when a respected site (high inbound, low outbound ratio) links to something, it gets counted, even if clearly nf marked. And Bing disregards the nofollow directive completely because they can't use it anyway - the whole link counting is patented.

I am not exactly 'searching' for such pages. I just check the PR of any domain I can find and keep the higher ones to investigate them for ways to drop a link on (outsourced or otherwise).

Oh and I only care about domain pr. It seems that subpage pr is important for its own ranking, which is of no importance when hunting for backlinks.

So a PR9 domain but the page has PR of 0. You'll still comment on it and consider a high PR link?

Yeah. It's how I do it.
Or I could also snatch the sitemap of every domain or use a mini crawler to find all the subpages, then chek their PR, then pick the ones with the highest value... I just don't think that internal pr is important for external link value.

Addendum:
PR 9 and 10 are special of course. I only have less than 400 of them so I don't really think some crappy fb, piwik or recovery.gov link will do me much good on its own.

Competition is pretty hard, it's a 22k exact match keyword with some authority sites, but i try to diversify my linkbuilding now. Maybe i need more than 10 comments but i'll try the safe way first.

I had the same idea with pinging them. Some sites i commented on are crawled every 10 days, so i could speed things up. What do you use for pinging?
