I think he's right, I've seen many http sites as well
HTTPS would be a ranking factor on a e-commerce website.
A manual reviewer would mark it as low quality if people would transact over http.
For your ordinary blog where you talk about why coffee disrupts your morning wood, it would actually be lame to use https as a ranking factor, or as a deciding factor between two websites.

IF a website is informative and user friendly, and people are looking for that kind if information inside of it, there is no SEO barrier to rank #1st (maybe just another site, with better and comprehensive info inside). But it's a plus to have HTTPS installed, mostly because it's easy to get a free SSL nowadays.

few of my sites on "free hosting" subdomains that don't offer https but only http rank beyond my https sites. so it could be a ranking factor but its certainly not de-motive factor. That is https sites will rank on top of you, but if you use http only and there are not https sites then you might be on position #1

I use https just to remove the ‘not secure’ before my domain. I know it doesn’t affect SEO.
I put all of my websites on HTTPS. It’s not a ranking factor per se, but I’m sure it helps. KIND OF like the same way page load helps the user experience. A secure website helps a little. Though, most of sites have a shop section, so.

same opinion, i see almost every e-commerce site now have https. And visitors also feel safer to bst or click something in the website

It should only be an issue for websites that use transactions or even registering as personal info will be susceptible to mitm attack but for a blog, I don't think so

Nowadays most of the sites have https , almost every site
I think john meuler is full of %&$#. He lies all the time.
Try building an ecom site with payment gatway and no ssl, you cant!. Payment gayways plugins can detect no ssl and wil through error.

Nothing have direct connection to ranking most of the time. So thats why seo gurus and meuler make misleading statements.

If you use shared hosting for your site you can get issues with your site so wants to change the secureness. That's the main reason people go for HTTPS mainly
And as the above members said, e-commerce site without HTTPS is not useful you must get the secureness
So apart from a ranking factor HTTPS is one of the default factor for your site maintenance

I usually go with HTTPS to get rid of the "Not Secure" badge and not run into issues with Facebook / Google Ads if any. Better safe than sorry with those two
