My Journey at 17 to $1000/month with YouTube + Blog

Hiya!

In April 2020, while my country was locked down, I had a channel idea with a pretty simple concept. To focus on making evergreen tutorials which rank in YouTube's search to gain steady views every month. Since then, I have uploaded 9 videos and I'm bringing in around $100 a month from YouTube AdSense.



I have been quite lazy with my channel over the past 2 years, and I am ready to try and expand this into more than a YouTube channel and here are my goals:

• Create my blog (domain and hosting already bought)
• Direct people to my blog when they need to download files for the tutorials, rather than other people's websites.
• Upload at least 1 video per week.
• Give written tutorials with the same topics as my videos to rank in Google's search.

I do struggle to stay motivated with projects, hence why I have only uploaded 9 videos so far on this channel. I plan to give updates to this journey regularly to try stay motivated and I am happy to answer any questions people may have and hopefully we can grow together!

Thanks, originally I found people doing something similar to what I'm doing right now and I emulated them. Now I just need to work out how to make my work better than theirs, and work out a strategy to monetize each view to the best of my ability.

That's mainly from reading this forum and finding other resources online. Most things have been done before all you have to do is work out how to do it better.

Thanks! I'm planning on waking up earlier before school so I can put in some hard work while still dedicating time to focus on my studies during the day and the evening.

Will do! I plan to give updates to this thread when I work on this project. I don't expect my journey to be a quick process but I believe I can get there eventually.

Update - 25th January 2022​

As you would expect, I am still at high school/secondary school. I am coming up to my exams so I need to limit how much time I spend working on this project rather than studying. That being said, today I woke up an hour earlier than usual and did some work, here's what I've done so far:

• Finished designing my new logo in Illustrator.
  • I find Illustrator quite difficult as I've never used it before, so if I were to do this again I would probably just pay someone to make it for me on Fiverr, as my logo design is pretty simple due to my lack of knowledge.
• Created Homepage and About Page.
  • I used the Astra theme for my WordPress site. I was doing some research prior to making the site, and people recommended not to use a theme at all, to prevent incompatibilities. I decided to just go ahead with a theme to make the process a lot easier to get the site done ASAP.

Creating the website inside WordPress is definitely a new experience, but it isn't too difficult. I've decided that I only want to do "Whitehat SEO" for my site. While doing some research, I've found some people doing something similar by driving traffic to their website through YouTube alone. I read some information stating that having loads of back-links aren't as important starting out as they used to be, and you're better getting your back-links organically overtime by actually producing good content.

As for the YouTube channel, I haven't done any further work. Thankfully since my videos rely on search my channel still continues to grow despite making new videos. However, I am planning to upload new videos soon once my site is complete.

Update - 28th January 2022​

I've been busy with school this week. However, I have began writing my first article for my blog. I am making sure to focus on quality rather than quantity, as I am not in a rush. I would rather do it properly rather than having to remake it in the future.

Even though this week hasn't been extremely productive when it comes to the project, I did partner with my first company today! This is great news, as I have a video receiving 50k views a month directly relating to their services. I already previously planned to make an updated/improved tutorial for my channel, as my current one was completely rushed, as it was made quickly in under an hour. If I incorporate this company well into my improved video, I will hopefully make a couple sales and receive a 15% recurring commission.

Hopefully by the end of next week I will have the website fully up and running, then I can remake my main tutorial with the website to direct traffic to, and the affiliate link to maximize profits. I have already more-less planned what shots I will take for the video, and how I will present the video, so hopefully the video itself won't take long to produce. Even though you may be thinking I am spending too much time on one video, once this video is over and done with, I have plenty of follow up tutorials I can make for different versions etc.

Update - 4th April 2022​

It's been awhile! Sorry for not updating this thread often. Even if I don't send a message for a long time, I'll come back eventually to complete this journey. I regret to inform that I haven't been putting any work into my blog or YouTube channel.

I never made that new video promoting the affiliate, although I plan to after my exams finish in early June - I've been dedicating most of my time trying to learn all the content so I don't fail. On a lighter note, I did decided to put the affiliate in the pinned comment of my video during March, and and I made 4 commissions! Even though it's still small ($10) right now, it's a recurring affiliate so as I get more commissions it'll build up overtime.

March Revenue in Total:
YouTube Adsense: $125.90
Affiliate 1: $10.80
Total: $136.90

I'm still far away from my goal, although I'm still pretty pleased with my revenue and excited for June when I make some videos directing to my website
