I'm trying to rank a finance website at the moment with some success however it does feel harder than other niches. Websites with much lower third party metrics across the board (DA, DR, TF) are outranking me for many terms.

Does anyone have any practical tips for operating in YMYL niches?
Do I need a chunky about us page?
A full populated contact page?

Things like that...

Yes, with proper url silo structure, mass page generation, authority outbound links and great internal linking you should be on your way.

One thing I have seen work is for difficult niches, find the closest government agency/website that has legal authority over your niche, and copy the whole sitemap, deploy the same pages/url structure as the gov site, spin the page content, ect and interlink from those pages to your SEO pages.

For example; if you're niche is Retirement Planning Services in Canada... I would utilize the url structure, content, outbound links, ect same as the gov site:

Code:
https://www.canada.ca/en/financial-consumer-agency/services/retirement-planning.html
https://www.canada.ca/en/financial-consumer-agency/services/retirement-planning/retirement-checklist.html
https://www.canada.ca/en/financial-consumer-agency/services/retirement-planning/money-to-retire.html

IME you'll need tons of trust. Build authority. It weighs more than links even for YMYL.

In finance you'll need some trusted names writing for your site. Make sure your authors are trusted by the search engines. Do they have personal profiles? Profile photo? Good resume?

I deal with YMYL niche, well... only YMYL, so I can't compare it to other niches.
A few things I've noticed:
1. Can't rank a parasite there, max I had medium on page 3 for a relatively easy keywords. Tried popular parasites and nothing, with articles of 2k words or so.
2. My web2.0 don't show up in top 100 in google... in bing I have about 5 for some queries.
3. Now and then, you get some very weak websites showing up on page 1 but they don't stay there for long and eventually disappear from top 100. In 2014 or 2015, I did a test on a small website (easy keyword), it was on page 3, so I used panda bot and took it to page 1, then I stopped and within 6 months it went back to page 3-5 and now to oblivion.
4. Content length is not as important as many make it out to be. My 500 word article can easily outrank 2,000 word rubbish (rubbish, because if I struggle to come up with 500 words for a simple answer, 2k must be fluff). But maybe it's in every niche.
5. Yeah, you need to consistently build links just to maintain your position... Done it, the moment I stop building links my site starts to slide.
